Samuel Barton (1804-1840) was born in Salem, the first child of John Barton, a merchant. He began work as a clerk for shipping merchant Joseph Peabody. In 1827 Peabody appointed Barton, along with Captain Thomas M Saunders, supercargo of the George. Barton remained supercargo for seven of the George's nine voyages to India. Barton worked with such notable merchants as Joseph Peabody, Daniel Perkins and Gideon Tucker. Together they conducted prosperous trade in Indian silk and indigo, and shipped opium from China and Turkey.
