Description | This volume was kept by the supercargo of the ship Confederacy on a trip from the port of New York to Mauritius, Canton, Calcutta and Manila. Early entries record the progress of the voyage along with the course, winds and weather. Observations on the ship's passage include its latitude and longitude, distance travelled each day, sicknesses on board, religious worship, disciplinary actions, fishing activities, and sightings of other ships. Another portion of the manuscript is devoted to trade and features instructions on how to deal with the Hong merchants in China as well as how to conduct business in Calcutta and other ports. An invoice of goods for American markets lists handkerchiefs, cloth and other dry goods. |
