Description | A hand-drawn map of the Hawaiian island of Niihau. In 1833 the Sandwich Islands Mission commissioned J Denison to complete a large-scale wall mao of the Hawaiian Islands. the original has not survived, but several separate portions have, in the form of contemporary copies made by the wife of Reverend John S Emerson (Ursula Sophia Newell Emerson). A pencil note reading: 'Drawn by Mrs Emerson' can be seen on the bottom edge. |
