Description The logbook of the clipper ship Surprise details three voyages, from New York to San Francisco, Shanghai, and back to New York (Apr 1854-Mar 1855); from New York to Hong Kong, Shanghai, and back to New York (Apr 1855-Mar 1856); and from New York to Penang, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Shanghai (April 1856-Nov. 1856). Home port was New York; master was Charles A Ranlett, Jr. It is a daily log that describes wind, weather, location, sightings of ships, shipboard occupations, provisions and supplies, sightings of penguins and porpoises, crew, illnesses, handling cargo, and a total eclipse of the moon. Includes illustrations of land, flags and a house, and news clippings.
