William French arrived in Hawaii in March 1819 on the ship Neo, en route to China for a trading voyage. French traded for almost 10 months with many of the chiefs and a good number of the foreign residents. The most revealing accounts are those with Kamehameha I and his son Kamehameha II (Reho Reho, or Liholiho).
