Travel and Tourism

Much of the material in China, America and the Pacific centres around the idea of travel, transportation and exploration. American merchants travelled to Canton to trade at the Chinese markets aboard great vessels which had been prepared for long voyages with meticulous precision. A selection of items from the Columbia Papers collection from 1787-1817 at the Massachusetts Historical Society consists of business papers, accounts and receipts, including information on repairs to the Columbia Rediviva before her second voyage to the Pacific northwest, the appointment of Robert Gray as Ship’s Captain and an invoice of goods that were to be put on board before the second sealing voyage commenced.
