Title Urn with a Pair of Fo Dog Candlesticks
Library Nantucket Historical Association
Date c. 1804-1810
Description Porcelain decorated in underglaze sepia with overglaze red, green, blue, sepia, and gilding. The urn design had its origin in late sixteenth-century Europe and was a popular Wedgewood form in the eighteenth century. The two candlesticks represent the renewed popularity in curiosities and mantle ornaments. This pair is modelled after the monumental Dogs of Fo that quarded Buddhist temples and rites of the domestic altar.
