Title Map of Niihau
Reference Map Drawer 1
Library Hawaiian Historical Society
Date c. 1836
Author / Creator Kunui
Description A hand-drawn map of the Hawaiian island of Niihau, made by Kunui, a student of Ursula Sophia Newell Emerson, a talented map copyist. The longitude and latitude lines have been transferred and firmly fixed by a series of pinpricks, but the map itself is a meticulous freehand copy. Why the compass rose and scale rule of Mrs Emerson's version do not appear is a mystery. Together with the David Malo map, this is probably the only such early student work by Hawaiians known to have survived.
