Gideon Tucker (1778-1861) was born in Salem, the son of Salem merchant John and Lydia Tucker. After attending grammar school in Salem, he became a clerk for the merchant Joseph Peabody and became Peabody's partner after 1801. They owned 25 vessels together. In addition to these, Tucker owned several vessels and invested in various shipping ventures with his brother Samuel and Andrew Tucker. During the War of 1812 he served as an aide-de-camp to Major Gideon Foster. In 1804 he married Martha Hardy Goodhue.
