Description Diary kept by United States navy lieutenant George Henry Preble while on a voyage aboard the sloop of war Macedonian from New York to China, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, and eventually around the world back to Boston, from 1853-1856, with stops made at Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tokyo, Canton, and Manila. Preble records sailing conditions, longitude and latitude, weather, ships sighted, daily life aboard ship, engagements with pirates, descriptions of places stopped, dining and social engagements with officers, surveying the coast of Japan, and daily life in the navy. The ship was commanded by Joel Abbot and after his death John Pope. Some pages show drawings, illustrations and engravings. Also included are loose letters and ephemera.
