Author / Creator de La Perouse, Jean Francois Galaup
Description The colour plates accompanying Jean Francois Galaup de La Perouse's account of a French voyage around the world between 1785 and 1788. This expedition was intended as a complement to the explorations of Captain Cook, but because the expedition disappeared in 1788 only fragmentary information has survived. The ships Boussole and Astrolabe were in Hawaiian waters, off the coast of Makena, Maui, for only a few days in May 1786, but long enough for one of the artists aboard to render the first view of the island.
