Crime

One of the recurring themes throughout the collection is crime and conflict. Several logbooks include cases of mutiny or desertion whilst at sea, for example on board the brig New Hazard (see The Voyage of the New Hazard to the Northwest Coast, Hawaii and China, 1810-1813), where the author described being put in irons and flogged as “he had the weakness to go ashore with four others”. In this case, and in many others like it, the captain of the ship would enlist the help of natives, either through threats or promises of payment, to hunt down the missing seamen. Similar vessels, however, experienced violence from the natives themselves, for instance during the Voyage of the China, where around 600 natives revolted, and seized possession of a castle at Callao, demanding $100,000.
